Powering renewable energy learning for STEM week

Educating children and young people in renewable energy

We are committed to providing learning opportunities to inspire young people, and to help them understand the critical role of offshore wind in helping the UK reach net zero. Projects like Berwick Bank have the potential to generate and supply clean, homegrown energy that will benefit future generations for years to come.

As part of our STEM engagement programme, we are supporting schools in East Lothian and Northumberland, located close to the proposed Berwick Bank project, to learn more about our proposed offshore wind farm project and why it is so important in helping tackle the climate emergency.

Last week, we visited Cambois Primary in Northumberland to take part in the school’s STEM week programme. Our team had the chance to spend time with three class groups over two days to carry out interactive learning sessions.

The STEM week programme was fantastic fun for both the children and our own team. As well as our talks, pupils had the chance to build their own mini wind ‘turbine’, and lots of eager volunteers tried on the safety gear worn by our technicians. For the pre-school group, our team spent the afternoon planting herbs in the school’s garden, part of the school sustainability plan.

Earlier this year, the Berwick Bank project funded the build of an outdoor classroom for the school, including a garden ‘tipi’. The outdoor learning space has been an invaluable addition to the facilities and there are big plans for the summer term, when it will become a prime spot for outdoor classes.

It was a privilege to be a part of the STEM Week activities. The children were so positive and keen to get involved, particularly when it came to trying on the safety kit - there were clearly some budding engineers in our midst which was great to see! It truly is an amazing school, and we can’t wait to go back and see the 'tipi classroom’ in action.

Thank you to Cambois Primary School for letting us take part in your STEM week activities, and we cannot wait to visit again!
