Energy Live! Aberdeen: the need for a fair Just Transition

SSE Renewables Berwick Bank recently sponsored Energy Live! in Aberdeen, where Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Holyrood Sources podcast to host a live debate on our energy future.

Leading the discussion, Holyrood Sources hosts Calum Macdonald, Geoff Aberdein and Andy Maciver were joined by by Gillian Martin, SNP MSP (Aberdeenshire East, Constituency) and Energy Minister; Sarah Boyack, Labour MSP (Lothian Region), and Party Spokesperson on Energy, Just Transition and Net Zero and Douglas Lumsden, Conservative MSP (North East Scotland Region) and Party Spokesperson on Energy, Net Zero and Transport.

The event brought together 350 industry stakeholders, the wider business community, and political leaders, to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time -the just transition of the energy sector.

Doubling down

Across the event, one resounding messaged emerged. We need to double down on our efforts to shape a future where clean, renewable energy, powers the world we live in.

It was extremely encouraging to witness the collective sentiment at Energy Live! towards the urgent need for collaborative action in a drive to achieve lasting sustainable change. However, in doing so, we must ensure a fair and equitable transition for all stakeholders involved, from workers to communities.

Becoming the net zero capital of Europe

With a rich history as the oil and gas capital of Europe, Scotland is poised to lead the way in transitioning to become the net zero capital of Europe. However, we are in danger of losing this vast economic opportunity if we do not act now, with definitive action taken to speed up the consenting process.

We extend our thanks to the organisers, guests, and of course Calum MacDonald, Geoff Aberdein and Andy McIver from Holyrood Sources, for making this event a huge success. Together, we are forging a path towards a brighter, more sustainable future, that leaves no one behind, for generations to come.
