Careers for young people powering change

SSE Renewables Berwick Bank virtual reality

Renewable careers for young people

Berwick Bank Wind Farm, has the potential to unlock a multi-billion-pound investment and create up to 4,650 jobs, boosting future renewable careers for young people.

As part of our ongoing programme of STEM activities at Knox Academy and other schools in East Lothian, we started 2024 with a renewed commitment to inspire the next generation of talent in renewable energy that may well contribute to the success of Berwick Bank in the future.

On Wednesday 17 January, members of the SSE Renewables team working on the Berwick Bank project attended Knox Academy’s Career Fair to give young people, parents and the wider community the chance to find out more about future opportunities working on the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

Interactive opportunities for pupils

The careers fair was a great success and gave us the chance to demonstrate the different roles available in offshore wind. What’s more, we were able to share information about Berwick Bank and the opportunities the project will bring to local communities in East Lothian.

We had an offshore technician safety climbing kit and the VR headset available for pupils to try out, giving them an immersive, interactive experience of climbing a 275m offshore turbine to take in the panoramic view from the top. It was encouraging to see so many pupils and members of the local community interested in learning more about offshore wind.

The positive conversations we were able to have with pupils from S1 and above, along with parents and members of the community, underlines our commitment to fostering relationships and promoting careers for young people in renewables, helping to secure Scotland’s green energy transition.

Thank you to Knox Academy for inviting us – we’ll be back again in the near future!
